Installing CRAYFIS: Android
Step 1: Join our beta-testers Google Group
Although our goal is 1 million phones, we're not quite ready to handle them all yet. To grow the experiment responsibly (i.e. to keep our servers from crashing), we are restricting downloads to members of a Google Group with a limited size. This is only to control our signups—we promise, no spam. Click the button on the left to sign up.
Step 2: Download the app
- On your phone, use the button on the right to access our beta-testers page.
- Follow any one of the "download" links to our hidden page on the Google Play Store.
- Click the Install button.
Step 3: Open the app
Put your phone down on a surface (front side up) and click on the CRAYFIS icon to start the app. After a quick tutorial, you will be prompted to set the "autostart window". If enabled, the app will start itself when you plug your phone into a power source between the hours that you choose (you can interrupt it at anytime, of course). Finally, the app will ask permission to access your camera and location. Click yes, and the app will do the rest!
What to expect
To see particles, the app needs the camera to be shielded from light which will drown them out. (Imagine trying to see stars during the day).
Once the app locates the covered camera, it will scan for any hyperactive pixels to ignore, which may take up to 15 minutes—fortunately though, these results last for about a week. The app then examines light levels and chooses a threshold for good particle candidates (this only takes ~30 seconds). Once this is finished, data-taking begins.
How to quit the app
The app will automatically stop within 30 seconds once the phone is no longer lying flat. Data-taking can also be stopped with the pause button in the upper right corner.
Send us feedback!
This is a beta version, so we appreciate any bug reports or feedback about your experience. Contact us

To control other app features, press the "Settings" button. You choose
- The autostart window, and how long to wait before starting. For example, you might want the app to only run between 10 PM and 7 AM, and to wait 1 minute after detecting power.
- The camera resolution and frame rate, to take better data or use less power.
- To enable a gallery of particle tracks found!
